What we keep when you check a footpath
Right to Walk is run by Crashfree India. This page says what is stored, what becomes public, who can see the rest, and how to have your record removed.
Nothing leaves your phone until you send it
You can do a check without sending anything. Drafts and saved checks stay in your own browser. We do not use cookies, ads, tracking or analytics scripts.
Your location is read only after you tap the location button. A check is sent to us only when you choose to add it to the record and tick the consent box.
What we store when you add a check
- Where the check is: the start point (and the end point for a full check), how accurate your phone said the location was, the road name, area, side of the road and the road owner you picked.
- Your answers, the problems you marked, and the language you used.
- Photos, if you add them. Your phone shrinks and re-saves each photo before upload, which removes the camera details and GPS stamp. If that cannot be done safely, the photo is not uploaded.
- Your first name, if you choose to give it.
- A random ID made by your browser, so we can count repeat checks from the same phone. It is not linked to your name, number or account.
We do not store your IP address or browser details with a check. The record is kept in a Supabase database in India (Mumbai).
What becomes public
A moderator reads every check before it is published. Once published, the map, the report and the open data can show the road, area, location rounded to about 10 m, your answers and the photos the moderator approved. You agreed to publish these under the CC BY 4.0 licence, so anyone may reuse them with credit.
These are never public: your first name, the browser ID, the exact location, GPS accuracy and moderators' notes. Only Crashfree India's moderators can see them.
Other services that see your visit
The site is hosted on GitHub Pages. Records go to Supabase. Map tiles come from OpenStreetMap's servers. Like any website, these services see your IP address and standard browser details when your phone asks them for something. We do not receive or keep that.
Removing or correcting your record
Write to deepanshu@crashfreeindia.org with the road and the date of your check. We will remove it from the map and from future open-data files, or correct it. We cannot recall copies that other people have already downloaded under the licence.
We have not yet set a fixed time after which unpublished or rejected checks are deleted. Until we do, you can ask us to delete yours at any time.
